A wave hello.

Hey folks!

How's it been going?  It's been a whirlwind of busy in my neck of the woods.  I recently moved to a cute little hidden home in central Austin, which has been a bit of an adjustment, only because I left all of my comforts that were in my 'hood but I am quickly finding that I am loving it here even if it's a bit Austin weird.  That is what I am here for, right?  I have had nothing but weird living situations since I moved here so why would I expect this to be any different?

Welcome to my kitchen.  Something I didn't really have in my last house.  I am excited to build some pieces and re-purpose some others that I look forward to finding either by thrifting or dumpster diving!

I love the half tile, half wall decor in the kitchen.  It's very old and large and CUTE!  And check out my view and the size of that YARD!!  Par-tay!

I am currently running Fartsy Arts full time and have been trying to surround myself with colors, art, and inspiration.  So far it's working because I feel pretty confident about the level of production in preparation for the holidays this year.  Starting in July is something that I have always strived to do but never quite got there.  My Etsy shop is finally getting stocked with ALL new stuff.  WOAH. Right? So. Much. Excitement!

A lot of my time has been spent at TechShop here in Round Rock-Austin.  They have laser cutters. OMG drool.  It has allowed me to expand my business in ways I never believed was possible.  They have the DC's (Dream Consultants - WHAT!???) there to help at all times with any questions you have and a community of makers that serve as endless inspiration and brain storming sessions.  If you have a TechShop near you... GO. Join. DO IT!

In the upcoming weeks I will have a lot of new product releases.  I have a lot of ideas up my sleeve that I plan to start executing this week, so stay tuned!!

If you want to be the first to know, won't you join my newsletter?  YES! Sign me up!

Happy Monday and hope your week is filled with adventure!

Hale House Vintage - A mini tour in Fort Worth, TX

This LARGE turquoise plane would catch your eye too, right?  Well, not only was it this huge plane that had me U-turn my car around in a city that in my opinion, is REALLY scary to drive in.  Maybe it has something to do with me being super protective of the newest car I have ever owned, or maybe it was the time I tried to switch lanes (with my blinker on) and had a horn honked at me for literally 10 seconds.

I speak of Fort Worth, TX.

A city otherwise full of hospitality and friendly folks.  Each place we ate at had amazing service with a smile and they were all curious where the ladies with the orange bags came from.  The National Art Education Association convention took place in Fort Worth this year.  A city filled with our large orange bags to snag all of the free swag from art supply vendors covered the town along with free cowboy hats from Michaels that were decorated with Texas glitz and glam.  With the colorful rhinestones decorating these hats, you could see the teachers from a mile away.

The morning we found this awesome little shop we were on our way to find a cafe to finish up our last minute presentations.  Yes, even teachers are sometimes unprepared.  (sshhhhhh!!!) The night before we rolled in to our hotel late and unpacked the car and ding dong me left the interior light on so AAA got a silly phone call from me in the morning.  Ooopsie.  After the jump we had to drive around for an hr to charge it up again and came across Hale House Vintage.

A cute and tiny little shop that jumps out at you.

When you live in Texas, you see these beauties all over the place.  You can't help but stop to take a peek inside and then all of your gypsy blood starts boiling and you want to hop in and travel the US tucked in this cozy little slice of heaven.  Shiny.  SO shiny. (Also, not for sale...boo)

Oh look what we found inside!!

One of my life goals is to own a sign like this. Not sure if I want it to say something snarky or simple.  I just LOVE these!!!!

Love this color.  Love the memories these chairs bring back.  Love the rust.

If you are in Fort Worth, stop by Hale House Vintage and say hi to Bekah Hale, the owner.
She will greet you with a lovely smile and share some amazing spots to see in the city.

(you will see where we ended up in the next blog post)

The shop also carries a few little Fartsy Arts pieces!!
I am proud to be a part of such an amazing store!

What is the weirdest thing YOU have seen??

Be prepared to go down a couple different roads in this post.. I don't exactly know where I am going but I hope it's interesting....

I hope that you visited Kelly's Recipes yesterday, if not, please do. There are lots of yummy things on there. I guess after browsing some more myself, I got really hungry. I even completed the Best Food Ever TV series narrated by the lovely John Goodman. I was excited to see that one of my FAVORITE food carts here in Austin was high on the top 10 list of food carts in the country! They even featured my FAVORITE....Chicken Cone!!

OK..OK.. before I start to drool more thinking about food, on to the weird and wacky thing(s) I found for today. Now, let me first say that with the D.I.Y. movement that is happening across the nation, there are very few things that actually surprise me. I have seem some pretty weird things. This, is not so weird.. but I like it.

This funky little number comes from artist Joy Kampia. If you visit her site, you will find a few other "food" outfits as well as some really well done crocheted food items...Makes ya hungry!!

I want to wear a hamburger!!

I think this post is going to take a turn. While I love the hamburger dress...I think I can do better. Digging through my noggin to think of something wacky that I have seen, I remembered this little (OK..not so little) show in Hudson, OH.

My lovely friend Lori of Basement Art Creations referred me to this show and I convinced one of my besties to get to work, make some inventory, and share a booth with me. We drove, in a BLIZZARD and through tons of construction to get to this hotel that was in the middle of no where.

We set up at Oddmall this past holiday season, and well, the name fits. One vendor that definitely stood out was a woman who had taken old porcelain dolls and turned them into zombies.. as if those collectible porcelain dolls aren't creepy enough. I scoured the Internet to try and find this vendor but it was no use..I couldn't find her BUT I did find these which make me giggle...

This is artist Jessica Harrison. I encourage you to take a look at her site. There you will find not only these dolls, but she has these unbelievably creepy pieces of furniture that looks as if they were made of skin.

I am intrigued, yet disturbed at the same time.

THAT is what makes a good piece of art.. mixed emotions!

Happy hump day folks!

It's Showtime! Gearing up for holiday shows- how-to's

Shows are personally the highlight of what I do. I am addicted to them. Finally, after 4 years, preparing for a show has become a little less crazy. I would like to share my story.

In September of 2008 I participated in my first show. When the call for vendors came out for the the first annual DIY Street Fair in Ferndale, MI I teamed up with a friend and we applied to share a booth. What did I just do? I had NO idea what doing a show meant. All I know is ever since I babysat a friends booth at the Detroit Urban Craft Fair one year, I wanted to do that. I wanted to have a booth, and sit there, with MY stuff.

The dream was about to come true. But it scared the pants off me.

In the upcoming weeks of the show, I remember having some freak outs that consisted of the following:
* do I have enough stuff?
* how do I display it?
* what do I charge?
* do I make business cards?
* do I have stuff for all types of people?

and the biggest.....
* will they like me?

My friend was kind enough to share some of her display items for my part of the tent. I had no branding so I had the worst generic tags...ever. My boyfriend designed some amazing cards which were so great so I was at least covered in that area. But, what if they didn't like my stuff?

I remember forgetting about my display and I went into this production frenzy. I made a list of everyone that may come and shop. I wanted something for EVERYONE. It was a bit overzealous, but I didn't care. I wasn't thinking rationally! I had turned into a mad woman that was overcome with excitement, fear, insecurity, greediness, anxiety, and exhaustion.

Then I remembered. This is my first show. It won't be perfect. I have to accept that.

It was also my birthday weekend. I was turning 26 and I decided that if it went horribly, then at least I would be celebrating something.

TIP 1: Relax. It will never be perfect.

This was my side of the booth. Notice the horrible white tags. They were handwritten, ugly, and frankly a pain in the butt to use. That large black hanging thing is a really old and ugly cork board covered in black felt, hung up with wire. I then used velcro to attach Ikea hot pads and stuck push pins in to hold the tags that earrings hung from. To add to the ugliness, I had a handwritten tag that stated the price of the earrings.

Horrible.

Fortunately...this turned out to be an amazing show. Both fun and very profitable, it started my addiction to showing my work.

TIP 2: Some type of "dig through" bin on your table

* Whether it is a bin of pinback buttons, clearance items, bowl of candy, who knows.......people want to "find" something. When my stock is low on key chains for a show, I will throw a bowl of buttons on my table and they are touched by everyone...and usually gone by the end of the show too.
My second show was the Detroit Urban Craft Fair that was hosted by Handmade Detroit. This is a pretty huge show for the area so my acceptance was exciting! The stress soon surfaced and the pressure of the reputation of this show began to weigh on me. Since DIY was throwing it's first fair, no one knew what to expect! But the DUCF is known for amazing vendors, lovely displays, and LOTS of shoppers! AHHH

Here I am at the DUCF in December of 2008. This time I had to condense my stuff down to one table and no space to hang.

One think that I learned is that people like to dig through things. Here is a tray full of keychains I made. They were basically gone at the end of the show. People loved to find that perfect one! It allowed them to feel and see them all, and possibly fall in love with a couple. These were at my first show and they went FAST!!

TIP 3: Packing display items - think HEIGHT and LAYERS

I have learned that having HEIGHT is important when displaying. To have some options when I set up, I usually invest in a ton of those cheap photo boxes that they sell at Michaels. Not only can I use the boxes to prop stuff but I can pack all of my stuff in them when I pack! Having options without a lot of extra clutter has proven to be very helpful. As you will see with the rest of the photos, no two set ups are the same.

Also, invest in a set of bed risers. This brings the table closer to people. I think I brought this up a couple of posts ago, but I think this makes a HUGE difference!

For this show I added some height with my earrings. In the past they were pretty low and unattractive. Now this big gold frame will attract some people.

Recently, I have been displaying my earrings on branches.

I created this tree-like structure for my earrings and have been told that people notice it from across the room. They zoom over to see what it is and if I am lucky, I sell a pair of earrings to them!

Layer display items and merch! It peaks interest and maximizes space on a table. If you sell jewelry, a mirror is a MUST! Once people see something on, they usually must have it!

TIP 4: Portable office

Some essentials you may need and should always have:
-notebook with blank paper. (I always have my notebook from Chicalookate. Mine is polka!)
-scissors - I got these Fiskars for a gift one year. All in one!!!
-calculator (I use Square on my phone or iPad)
-tape - scotch, duct, clear
-pins (safety pins or straight pins - I use these a lot when outdoors in the wind. Keeps my tablecloth from whipping around)
-pencils, pens, highlighters, SOMETHING! - ALWAYS have a red one for markdowns. (I like to mark some things down at the end of a show. Special "last hour deals". If you don't mark on the tag, you can create a sign! Great for last minute sales)
-extra tags
-camera - to snap a shots of your display and customers in your goods... for a blog recap perhaps?
-cooler - with nutritious snacks, water, lunch, etc. My fav. - AVOCADOS!
-tools - (Hammer, pliers, wire, nails, wire cutters, screwdriver with various heads) My table collapsed once at a show and thankfully, the fabulous Janna Bisset of Lilacpop had her handy hammer and nail which saved the day!!!
-something to work on! - bring some of your items to work on. People always come over to see what I am doing and I have even got custom orders at shows because I had my stuff there! It gives you something to work on during the slow times and also attracts people. It's fun too.. duh.
-extension chords
-table cloth(s) - Not office supplies but definitely important! Layer these for a fun look too!
-CHANGE - $1, $5, maybe some 10$
-receipt book

There are lots of great blogs that supply their ideal list of "Must have items." I am preparing for one of my last two shows in Michigan that happens tomorrow and thought I would share some of the things I have learned that have made shows even more fun to do. The key is to be prepared, be organized, eat a good breakfast with a good cup of coffee (or 2, or 3, or 4), get there early to set up, and HAVE FUN!!!

Some of the things I LOVE about shows:
- The giggles I get with some of the pieces. Nothing is more fun than hearing the giggles. I WANT GIGGLES!
- Face-to-Face interaction with customers.
- The chance to tell them personal stories about the pieces.
- Listening to their stories about memories that are triggered when they look at some of my work.
- Meeting other crafty people and making friends with so many talented folks.
- Networking and finding out about new shows and MORE opportunities for the future.
- Buying new goodies with my profits from the show and supporting other artists!

Let's face it. With the joy comes some pain. I hope this helps you prepare for a show in the future and makes things a little easier.

Kerrytown BookFest - 2011 recap

September 11th was the day of the 9th annual Kerrytown BookFest in Ann Arbor, MI. Thanks to Kate Kehoe of Chicalookate, I was able to snatch up a last minute cancellation. Boy, was I lucky!! Not only was this the most beautiful day, it was close to home, I had a super fabulous location, I met amazing people, and got to see some local crafty lovelies - Nicole Ray of Sloe Gin Fizz and Amanda from Dang Argyle. Fab Nicole took home the prize for the best display... unfortunately I didn't get to snap a photo but she always has these amazing props worked into her display like old crates and vintage typewriters. She totally deserved this award.. Congrats to her!!

I am proud of myself for taking the photos that I did. I wish I snapped more but it's hard to focus when you get scooped up in the excitement of shows. Let me share a few...

Every show presents the challenge of setting up, at least for me. Some people have it down to a science..but when you could fill a 10 x 10 tent with merch, it's hard to condense it to a 6 ft. table! EEEP!! What do I bring and what do I leave?? Here is a little peek at the right side of my table.

Here is the left side of my table.

Tip: Purchase bed risers. Bring them to shows. USE THEM!! I cannot remember where I heard this tip. If I could they would get all the credit because THIS has been such a huge help... not only for me but for the customer. It is so much more comfortable for people to look when things are closer to eye level. It's also good for you when you are behind there working on something or just standing.. feels oh so right!

Here is my table all set up. I am very happy with it and will be referring to these photos in the future to recreate this set up.

Here is the lovely Kate Kehoe of Chicalookate! She's a maker of quote magnets, record bowls, and record cover notebooks. (I have 3 polka notebooks that go EVERYWHERE with me) She is also a talented photographer and she creates coasters, notebooks, magnets, pocket mirrors and so much more with her awesome photos! (I have the cutest pocket mirror from her too!) She purchased one of my necklaces and was sporting it at the show. Thanks to this fab lady I was able to get in as a vendor!

Cute mother-daughter sport Fartsy Arts necklaces. Mom purchased a large, chunky, 2 in. camera pendant and adorable daughter got the Peter Pan Peanut Butter necklace!

This lovely volunteer who's husband had a booth a couple spots over from me purchased one of my funky headbands!!

Lynn Yates - Exhibitor Committee Chair was so freakin' sweet and bubbly! She came by and scooped up one of my new notebook necklaces that was finished at 2 a.m. the night before. Thanks Lynn!!

Storms-a-brewin'!!

This woman was so nice! She was working on binding a book with this little contraption. I zoomed over to check it out and got a little mini lesson about book binding. She had what she called a "caterpillar stitch" which was stitched along the front and back of this tiny book. I can't really explain but, it's worth a Google!

Some of my newer necklaces and my earrings. The two pieces on the bottom are my new line of jewelry holders made from antique letterpress drawers! Soon to be listed on Etsy. Custom colors available too!

Hope you enjoyed the mini tour!

a Virgo's high... the organized studio

Ahhhh!! a Virgo's paradise!

For the last two days I have been organizing my art room. After working hard to make stuff for a few shows, this poor space has been used, abused, and neglected. It was time to put stuff away, organize some loose treasures, and get an inspirational space back so I can create!!

I love this room. I am so lucky that my better half let me move in and take over this room as a studio. It has great lighting and a great vibe. My only complaint today is the HEAT!! too much sunshine and a 2nd floor room in an old house doesn't get too much AC....but that is tiny compared to the happiness it brings me.

I would like to share a few of my favorite little things.

This is one of my favorite little things in this room. It's just a simple little sketchbook but it holds so many goodies inside!!! After I go to a show, or purchase something, I immediately come home and put a business card in here!!

It is so great to have all my cards in one space. I hate when they are loose so what I do is separate the cards with a blank back from the cards with info on the back. The blank ones I glue in and the ones that are two sided I staple, just in case I need the info/website on the back. I started out by organizing into sections, but now I just throw them in. It is great because I have a little bit of space around each card to make notes. This book gets me excited when a birthday comes up or the holidays approach because it gives me an excuse to visit all these great artist's websites and shop handmade!!

I am in the process of organizing my fabrics the same way. I plan to attach these small swatches of fabric that I have into a book that is sectioned into two sections: Mas o menos (more or less.) One section will have swatches of fabric that I have a little of...for small projects and the other will have swatches of fabric that I have lots of...to make cool new outfits!!

This piece was a GREAT surprise!! It was 50% off at Michaels one day!! It is perfect to separate the old photos I use in my work. I am also trying to get my greeting cards organized. This has slats that you slide in the drawer that separates each section. Great thing about it is if you want to store a box or something larger, take the slat out and instant extra space!!! Highly recommended!

This is probably my favorite wall in my room. I have old letterpress drawers that I am using for rubber stamp storage. I love looking at all of my stamps. They get my creativity flowing!! My laptop is usually facing this way because it gives me happy tingles in my tummy!!

These little shadow boxes were my moms. She used to store her mini perfume bottles in them but gave them to me! They serve the same purpose for my smaller stamps.

This tiny little shelf hold only a VERY SMALL handful of some fun things...my favorite on here is the tiny Frida Khalo figurine I purchased for ONE DOLLAR! Her head comes off too! why? I have no clue. The rest of my stuff is packed for my move. It's so hard to not unpack it and just put it up for the remainder of my stay. Needless to say, I will probably cry when I have to give up this room.

Ah!!! BOOOKS!! I lovvvvveeeee books!!! This, again, is just a VERY SMALLLLL collection of my books. This antique dresser was a South Carolina Craigslist find that I love. $50 bucks!

I was going through some things in storage and found all of my Essential artist books! Time to get cracking on my art history lesson plans. No excuse now.. they are staring at me!

That concludes my mini tour......van Gogh hopes you have a great day!! Thanks for visiting!!
